The name of this district was made in reference to the trickles of underground fresh water that flowed from the cliffs towards the Agua Dulce beach side, and because it was a fishing village; so it was officially named San Pedro de los Chorrillos.
For more than twelve hundred years, during the pre-Hispanic period, Pachacamac was the most important Sanctuary on the coast. Its prestige is mainly due to its oracle, which was consulted by curacas and principal lords who came from all over ancient Peru on long pilgrimages that were part of a great Andean ritual. The God Pachacamac was greatly feared, since the power to make the earth tremble was attributed to him. The important temples built in his sanctuary demonstrate the importance he had for a long time.
